Brave Story

"Brave" is the latest animated film from Pixar and therefore becomes the film the parents of the world will be dragged to by their kids. The good news is that the kids will probably love it, and the bad news is that parents will be disappointed if they're hoping for another Pixar groundbreaker.
The princess is Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), seen in an action-packed prologue as a flame-haired Scottish tomboy whose life is changed by an early birthday gift of a bow, which quickly inspires her to become the best archer in the kingdom. Then we flash forward to Merida as a young lady of marriageable age, who is startled by request from Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) to choose among three possible husbands chosen by her clan.
Nothing doing, especially since all three candidates are doofuses. Merida leaps upon her trusty steed and flees into the forest, where her friends the will-o-the-wisps lead her to the cottage of a gnarled old witch (Julie Walters). She begs for a magic spell that will change Queen Elinor's mind, but it changes more than that: It turns Elinor into a bear. Witches never know how to stop when they're ahead.
Luckily, the magic spell comes with an escape clause. Merida has exactly two days to reverse the charm. After she and her mother absorb what has happened, they begin to work together and grow closer than ever, even though the queen cannot speak. There is a tricky complication. King Fergus had his leg bitten off by a bear (in the prologue), and has been indisposed toward them ever since. Unsurprisingly, when he sees his wife as a bear, he fails to recognize her.
And so on. This is a great-looking movie, much enlivened by the inspiration of giving Merida three small brothers, little-redheaded triplets. The Scottish Highlands are thrillingly painted in astonishing detail, and some action shows Merida's archery more than equal in assorted emergencies.
"Brave" has an uplifting message about improving communication between mothers and daughters, although transforming your mom into a bear is a rather extreme first step. Elinor is a good sport, under the circumstances. But Merida is far from being a typical fairy-tale princess. Having flatly rejected the three suitors proposed by her family, she is apparently prepared to go through life quite happily without a husband, and we can imagine her in later years, a weathered and indomitable Amazon queen, sort of a Boudica for the Scots. "Brave" seems at a loss to deal with her as a girl and makes her a sort of honorary boy.

Brave  Review

"Brave" is a sweet but small film propelled by the appeal of its
the main character, rebellious Scottish ginger, who takes a distinctive place in
a long line of Disney princesses.
Unlike the classic Disney princess, Merida has an adventurous, independent spirit.
She's honed her archery skills to the level of a master and she loves tearing
through the forest on her horse Angus. As a small girl, she bounds around in
playful mischief that seems to always result in finding the caring arms of her
mom or dad, the king, and queen. As a teen, she contests the decorum her mother
tries to instill in her as the princess, and she absolutely revolts against the
notion of an arranged marriage.
There may be some strange elements at play here: perhaps Pixar, having just
merged with Disney, wanted to put their own stamp on the passive image of the
traditional Disney princess. Maybe it's some misguided attempt to add a
little Girl Power to appease Disney's feminist critics. Probably that's just
the conspiracy theorist in me, but whatever the motivation, the results are a
unique, captivating heroine.
Dappled with light freckles and with cheeks that turn pink when she exerts
herself, Merida might not even be the star of this movie, but rather, her
hair. Each curly strand seems to hit the light in a different way, and
it's details like these that make the animation so gorgeous, from the visions
of the castle to the countryside to Merida's grotesque suitors,
As in any kingdom from the Scottish highlands to a suburban home, the king is
little more than a figurehead while the queen calls the shots, even when you
factor in his valor on the battlefield or against ferocious wildlife. When her
mother insists on the princess' betrothal to one of three inept suitors, Merida
tries to change her fate with the help of legendary wisps who lead the way to
the home of a witch who may have the power to change her mother's mind--but
with witches there's always a catch.
Those who expect a sprawling quest or epic battle scenes may be disappointed, since
the scope of this adventure is basically limited to the castle and its
backyard and the only battles are comic skirmishes between rowdy Scottish
tribes (and perhaps between castle staff and tiny mischievous triplets, Merida's
brothers). The real conflict here is the mother-daughter relationship. And
bears.
"Brave" is tailor-made for mothers and daughters in anticipation of
later troublesome teenage years. The animation is superb, especially in the
full rich color of 2-D. I'd like to see what Merida can do in a sequel that
takes her out of her backyard into an adventure more grand and befitting of her
abilities. Ultimately the charm of her character and beautiful animation
transcend a provincial plot-line.
Like Mr. Roger Ebert, I'd give this movie 3 stars. I like it, and like
Mr. Ebert, I enjoy most of the movies I choose to see. I know this is a
"comment" section, but getting to see Mr. Ebert's review inspired me
to write my own. I like having this forum so I can sort of continuing what
always felt like conversations between me and a friend, although those
conversations were mostly one-sided. I miss Roger.
